Heat rises, so a two-story or split-level home with one thermostat almost always has a warm upstairs and a cool lower level. A zoning system lets each floor call for heating or cooling on its own, instead of running the whole house to satisfy one hallway.
Rooms over the garage, sunny west-facing rooms and finished basements often need different amounts of heating and cooling. Zoning, combined with the right ductwork and return air, directs air where it is needed.
When an addition or basement finish is tied into existing ductwork, it can throw off the balance of the whole house. A separate zone, or a ductless mini-split for that space, is often the cleanest solution.

Maintenance PlansMost smart thermostats work with standard furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps, but many need a common (C) wire for constant power, and heat pumps require the reversing valve and auxiliary heat to be set up correctly. We check your wiring and equipment before recommending a model.
Not directly. Ductless mini-splits use their own wireless remotes or compatible wall controllers, and a standard thermostat needs the correct interface to communicate with them. We can recommend the right control option for your mini-split system.
Dead batteries are the simplest cause, but a blank screen can also mean a blown low-voltage fuse on the furnace control board, a tripped condensate safety switch, or a wiring issue. If new batteries do not fix it, give us a call. See our furnace repair page for other common heating issues.
Motorized dampers installed in the ductwork open and close based on signals from a thermostat in each zone. A zone control panel coordinates the dampers and tells the furnace, air conditioner or heat pump when to run, so only the areas that need heating or cooling receive it.
In many homes, yes. We evaluate your duct layout, equipment and airflow first. Zoning works best with two-stage or variable-speed equipment and ductwork that can handle one zone running alone. If changes are needed, we will explain them before any work begins.
